In this article I want to share with you some more tips for you reduce clutter and baggage from your life.
In the first part of this article I told of a client who really wants to resolve old past issues that have been holding him back and how some subtle suggestions and stories and demonstrations helped him to make some powerful changes in his life.
This person seemed to hold on to a lot of emotion without ever letting the energy flow. He had frozen or trapped emotions that felt like heavy weights.
He also complained about feeling physical discomfort in his hip and lower back.
He seemed to kept every scrap of paper, business card, etc.
in his over stuffed wallet. Rather than confronting him about this and directly saying he should clean out his wallet and/or get himself a nice slimmer one, I used stories and characters in funny television shows that I know he liked to help guide him to make this wise choice. There is a thread here that you can probably follow...and by telling stories and then changing the subject and then sharing more ideas that also lead to making the changes it seems to come about more naturally.
In NLP and hypnosis we call this technique, pacing and leading. We pace the person where they are in their mood and state of mind and then we gradually lead them to some place better.
This method is less jarring than just telling the person to stop making excuses and change already!
By telling him stories and showing him changes that I had made recently, he got the message without it seeming like a personal attack or criticism ( which he had plenty of in his life already )
Also, I demonstrated by doing the same thing for myself. I cleaned out my old wallet and replaced it with a nice new slim one. Another true story I shared with him was how a client of mine is a Physical Therapist and she recommended that all men make these kinds of changes and that women take care in looking for handbags that are comfortable and not just fashionable.
Sure enough, this client eventually got my well intended message and showed me an even nicer wallet than the one I just got. He also seemed to be more comfortable and easy going.
Another client carries a ton of things with her even though you can buy bottled water, food, etc. yet for her this baggage represents security ( like a security blanket )
She noticed this picture and smiled the way I predicted she would. Then she joked that she identified with the "Peanuts" character, Linus and so we spoke a bit about this before I changed the subject to travels and about this really great poncho my aunt got for me in Mexico.
Then I reached into my small bag for my water bottle and I just happened to have with me a clothing catalog ( from my wife ) that showed a smiling woman wearing a really nice poncho on the cover.
I told her about how I loved watching Clint Eastwood westerns when I was a kid ( I still do :) and how I used to go through all the blankets at home looking for just the right one that looked like a poncho and which made me feel really good. I told her how happy I felt when I got this real poncho and I even wore it once for a Halloween costume party.
A few weeks later, she is smiling from ear to ear and feeling more secure and happy. She is wearing a very stylish looking poncho in her favorite colors. Just buying this outfit would not give her the security, yet this symbolized the work she had done and this was her just reward.
BONUS TIP : Consider rewarding yourself with an item that symbolizes some quality that you want more of (security, self esteem, sex appeal, sense of wealth--one client could not wait to show off his gold money clip that represented financial success to him after some hints...)
